Find the Alabama Health Insurance Plans Right for You
Alabama health insurance plans can be found in many forms, but most health care insurance packages fall into one of three main categories. There are HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plans, Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans and Indemnity coverage, each with its own benefits and restrictions. Each of these packages offers reasonable levels of health coverage for most families, but the plans vary in restrictions, approved health providers and premium pricing.
In an HMO, only health care received from a network-affiliated health service provider will be reimbursed, and any specialized health care must be referred by a primary physician in order to be covered. In a PPO, health care is covered at a greater percentage when you use an in-network provider with pre-negotiated network rates, but you may also go to out-of-network health providers and receive a lower level reimbursement of your expenses. With an Indemnity plan, you may select any health service provider you wish, and you will receive an established percentage reimbursement of your covered expenses. Of these programs, HMO packages will have the lowest premium rates, while Indemnity coverage plans are the most comprehensive and come with equally high premium rates.
When choosing between an HMO, a PPO or an Indemnity plan, you should first evaluate whether your preferred doctors, labs and hospitals are covered in the HMO or PPO network. Next, you should decide how much flexibility you would prefer in choosing health specialists should the need arise. Finally, you will need to evaluate the trade-off between more freedom in choosing physicians, specialists and hospitals versus the significantly higher premiums associated with having more flexibility.
